Installation of K&K Pickups
Installing the cap is the last step of a K&K pickup installation.
At this point we have a question- do you want this cap secured or not? I like to put a drop of Loctite on the cap to keep them from accidently coming off (which, if you're playing unplugged, will send your guitar crashing to the floor) but I had a customer who wanted to change the cap to a gold one and had some trouble removing the jack. Therefore, I'm giving you the opportunity to say "Loctite it!" or "Nay! Leave it!" If you choose to leave it unsecured, please make it a habit to check the jack frequently!
If I Loctite it (or you encounter another jack that's glued or Loctited) and you ever want to remove the jack, here's how:
First here's what a jack looks like from the outside (end cap is not in place). There's a a nut keeping the jack from slipping back into the guitar and...
...another nut on the inside to keep it from pulling out. Since our end cap is stuck tight and won't come loose, we have to work from the inside. Pull on the jack from the outside and use friction against the end block to turn the nut. You just need to get it a little loose. Then, reach inside (a child or small woman can do this fairly easily) and loose the inside nut all the way.
It'll look like this on the inside. At this point, you can slide the jack to the outside of the guitar:
With the jack outside the guitar, it should be fairly easy to grip both the jack and the cap with tools and twist the jack off. You can clip the pickup wires and resolder them later, or do the work right there- that's up to you.
